Especially this year, it can make a huge difference to a community to spend money at locally-owned, independent businesses. When it comes to filling your home with holiday spirit and decor, there’s no better option in Omaha than North Downtown’s Prairie in Bloom Marketplace. To learn more about decorating tips and trends, we tapped owners Mark Kanitz and Lukas Rix. Read on for Prairie in Bloom’s pro suggestions for decking the halls.

Keep it Classic

Good quality faux greenery never goes out of style. Whether it’s a simple spray or Garland piece, you’ll always be able to layer new trends into simple, timeless greens. They make a rich base layer to start from for any seasonal decor vignettes, according to Kanitz and Ritz.

Personal Taste

The duo also likes to chat with customers about their greenery preferences to help ascertain what their overall style direction is. Do they gravitate towards natural, iced or flocked? Kanitz added, “Starting there gives us direction towards their personal style. Then we can begin to layer other styles. Do they like glitz and metallics or natural pines and traditional decor? “

Trendy in 2020

Keeping it classic is always a great idea, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t popular items every year that can be gratifying to mix in with your older decor pieces. This year? Natural greens and wood elements are key, says the Prairie in Bloom team. “You’ll see lots of realistic faux greens in our store mixed with wood bead garlands and gnomes!  Plush gnomes with cute tall hats and sweaters are all the rage. Plus, we’re having a lot of fun with mixing wood bead garlands with natural pine garlands.”

Local Love

Prairie in Bloom is also intentional about sourcing from local Nebraska and Midwest vendors. They carry the ever popular Prairie Girl candles produced in Benkleman, NE as well as canvas art out of northwest Iowa and wood earrings made right here in Omaha. There are even locally-sourced antiques curated by Kanitz and Rix sprinkled in with new items at the shop!

Beyond Holiday

Owner Kanitz also shared that Prairie In Bloom is not just a Christmas shop, stating, “We carry year around decor but certainly love the holiday season, so you’ll feel like you’re in a Christmas store this time of year.” The end of September always kicks off a busy holiday season as the weather turns cooler; customers tend to start to live indoors a bit more and look for ways to make home feel cozy again. Add a worldwide pandemic on top of that and people are more at home than ever, shared the proprietor.

Other year round highlights include real feel spring florals during spring, garden art for the summer and faux pumpkins for autumnal vibes. The shop loves to celebrate mother nature’s colors during each of the four seasons that we enjoy here in Nebraska.  They also carry decorative kitchen wares and accessories.
